2 What is different about 8 th grade? In preparation for high school, we expect our Eighth Graders to:  Take ownership and responsibility for academics  Initiate conversation with teachers regarding grades  Accept responsibility for behavior  Move from “problem-identification” to “problem- solving”  Learn and grow!

3 What is the purpose of Reading class? To significantly improve proficiency in reading for all students through analysis of structure, deeper meaning, and a variety of texts.

6 What is a FEADER Response letter? Students respond to what was read in a 20 minute time frame. Each letter includes the name and author of the work, a summary of what was read, and a reaction. Students will turn in a total of 4 letters per nine weeks Response letters are worth 15% of the total grade Wide independent reading develops fluency, builds vocabulary and knowledge of text structures and offers readers the experiences they need to read and construct meaning with more challenging texts. – National Council of Teachers of English

7 Required Materials 100 page Composition Book – to be used as a vocabulary reference A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park (by Oct. 1 st ) SUGGESTED MATERIALS: Section of a 3 ring binder Plastic sheet protectors Pocket folder Pencils Blue or black ink pens
