6 History Francisco Vasquez Coronado, a Spanish explorer searching for gold, traveled to NM. If became NM in 1540-1542. In 1598 the first Spanish settlement was established on the Rio Grande River by Juan de Onate. 1610 Santa Fe was founded and made the capital. U.S acquired NM 1848 as a result of the Mexican War. Since 1945 in Las Alamos, NM has been the leader in energy research and development. Minerals are the states natural resource. Las Alamos participated in and tested the Manhattan project.
