3 Autocratic Definition: Government in which one person possesses unlimited power. The citizen has little, if any, rights.

4 Forms of Autocratic Govts. 1. Absolute or Totalitarian Dictatorship Ideas of a single leader glorified. Government tries to control all aspects of social and economic life. Government is not responsible to the people. People lack the power to limit their rulers. Examples- Fidel Castro, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin

5 Forms of Autocratic Govts. 2. Absolute Monarchy King, queen, or emperor exercises the supreme powers of government/unlimited power. Position is usually inherited. People lack the power to limit their rulers. Absolute monarchs are rare today but from the 1400s to the 1700s they ruled most of Western Europe. Examples- Montezuma II, Atahualpa

6 Oligarchy Definition: Government by the few, a small group exercises control, especially for corrupt and selfish purposes. The citizen has a very limited role.

7 Oligarchy The group gets its power from military power, social power, wealth, religion or a combination. Political opposition is usually suppressed- sometimes violently. Examples- Communist countries such as China. Leaders in the party and armed forces control government. NOT in notes…you don’t have to write

8 Autocracy & Oligarchy Sometimes claim they rule for the people. In reality, the people have very little say in both types of government. Examples- May hold elections with only one candidate or control the results in various ways. Examples- Even when these governments have a legislature or national assembly, they often only approve decisions made by the leaders. NOT in notes…you don’t have to write

9 Democracy Definition: a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people. Citizens vote in elections. Two Types: – Presidential Democracy – Parliamentary Democracy

10 Presidential Democracy Citizens SEPARATELY elect the members of the legislature and the Chief Executive (President)

11 Parliamentary Democracy Citizens elect members of parliament Those members choose a leader from among themselves to be the Prime Minister (PM) The PM acts as the chief executive May have a monarch as the head of state Y e s, w r i t e a l l o f i t !
