3  Most of New England were religious people who disagreed with the established church; called Puritans  Wanted to purify Church of England  Separatists-started their own churches  Puritans follow teachings of John Calvin  They were a problem for English monarchs who led Anglican Church  Some Puritans sought refuge in North America

4  1620- Puritans (Pilgrims) crossed the Atlantic in the Mayflower  Plymouth Colony- Massachusetts Bay  Mayflower Compact-agreement by around 100 Pilgrims to form a government and obey its laws

5  1630- John Winthrop brings large Puritan Group over  Start Massachusetts Bay Colony by forming town of Boston  Form a Republic- Puritan man run government  Elect a governor (radical at the time)  Rhode Island-home to radical Puritans

6  Puritans didn’t practice religious toleration  Puritans believed God would punish any people who tolerated individual choice in religion  Massachusetts governor executed four Quakers and burned their books  Roger Williams/Anne Hutchinson-argued Massachusetts had not done enough to break away from Anglican ways

7  Roger Williams  Argued settlers had no right to take land from Indians  Said they need to purchase the land  Goes to Rhode Island, founds Providence  Anne Hutchinson  Argued Gods grace alone was key to salvation  Leaders of Massachusetts opposed women preachers  Banished From Massachusetts

9  Puritans saw native Americans as lazy savages  Pequot War  1630’s Puritans engaged with Fur Trade with Pequot's and other Indian tribes  Rivalry over trade and Indian opposition to English land expansion led to war  Puritan's teamed up with Narragansett and Mohegan

10  After Pequot War the Puritans worked to convert Indians to Christianity  Praying towns- Indians pressured to move here so they could be easily supervised  1674-14 Praying towns with 1600 Indians living there  Forced Indians to abandon traditional ways and clothing for English way of doing things

11  1675-Massive Indian rebellion  Named after Metacom-chief known to colonists as “King Philip”  Indians got guns from traders-devastated colonies at 1 st  Tide turned in 1676-Colonists destroy Indian crops and Indians run out of ammo  Colonists would acquire rest of their land  Defeated Indians fled to French colony in Canada
