LATERAL ANKLE SPRAIN

What is a sprain? Sprains occur when the ligaments are stretched more than normal resulting in a partial tear or complete tear of the ligament. Ultimately there is a loss of stability at the joint.

Risk Factors ● uneven ground ● previous untreated ankle injuries ● being overweight ● poorly fitting or worn out shoes

Degree of Severity Grade I - ligaments stretched not actually torn Grade II - partial tear Grade III - most severe with ligament completely torn and a lot of joint instability

Ligaments providing stability ●anterior talo-fibular ligament ATFL (goes from the talus to the fibula) ●calcaneo-fibular ligament (goes from the calcaneus to the fibula) ●posterior talo-fibular ligament PTFL (goes from the talus to the fibula).

Most Commonly Damaged
