3 Bullying

4 Bullying: unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. Bullying includes: Imbalance of power Bullies use their power (physical, strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity) to control or harm others Repetition Behaviors happen more than once

5 Verbal bullying: saying or writing mean things Social bullying: hurting someone’s reputation or relationships (relational bullying) Physical bullying: hurting someone’s body or possessions Cyber bullying: bullying that takes place using electronic technology

6 Bully: engages in the bullying behavior towards peer Victim: target of the bullying behavior Assistant: don’t start or lead bullying, but assist the bully Reinforcer: not directly involved, but give the bully an audience Outsider: remain separate from bullying situation Defender: defend the victim

7 The 2008-2009 School Crime Supplement found that, nationwide, 28% of 6-12 th grade students experienced bullying. (National Center for Education Statistics and Bureau of Justice Statistics) The 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System found that, nationwide, 20% of students in grades 9-12 experienced bullying. 9 Responding to bullying quickly and consistently sends the message that bullying is not acceptable. When bullying occurs: Intervene immediately Separate the kids involved Meet immediate medical needs Stay calm Model respectful behavior when finding out what happened

10 When finding out what occurred: Keep all involved students separate Listen to the story from all parties involved Listen without placing blame Do not label students as “bully” and “victim”
