2 Objectives Students will be able to state the definitions of the 8 parts of speech (noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, adverb, conjunction, preposition, and article) Students will be able to recognize and distinguish the parts of speech Kyla Kinnunen 2

3 The Parts of Speech The words that make up sentences can be put into 8 groups, known as the Parts of Speech. The 8 parts of speech are the following: Noun Adverb Pronoun Preposition Adjective Conjunction Verb Interjection Kyla Kinnunen 3

4 Noun A noun names… A person A place A thing An idea
Ex.) George Washington was the first president. A place Ex.) Josie likes to go to the beach with her family. A thing Ex.) I want to go out to eat for pizza. An idea Ex.) Jason is learning about the cell theory in biology. Kyla Kinnunen 4

5 Pronoun A pronoun takes the place of a noun (which is a person, place, thing, or idea). Common pronouns: He I It We She You They Example: Jake likes to go swimming at the lake. “He” takes the place of “Jake” He likes to go swimming at the lake Kyla Kinnunen 5

6 Adjective An adjective describes a noun or a pronoun.
A mean dog A red crayon An adjective describes a noun or a pronoun. Adjectives usually come before the noun or pronoun that they describe. Example: I want to go to the zoo to see the big elephant. “big” describes the “elephant” Kyla Kinnunen 6 This is a pretty sunset.

7 Verb A verb is an action word.
It’s what you do! You walk, you run, you talk, you smile, and you laugh. Examples: Jenna runs to the playground. Jackie walks a mile everyday. Kyla Kinnunen 7

8 Adverb An adverb describes a verb. Adverbs answer the question “How?”
Example: The dog ran quickly across the yard. Adverbs answer the question “How?” How did the dog run? The dog ran quickly. Adverbs often end in “-ly”. quickly noisily carefully painfully Kyla Kinnunen 8

9 Preposition A preposition links nouns, pronouns, and phrases to other words in a sentence. Prepositions usually show a location in place and time. Example: The book is on the table. “on the table” states where the book is located The dog is inside the doghouse. Kyla Kinnunen 9

10 Conjunction A conjunction connects words, groups of words, or sentences together. Common conjunctions: Examples: I want to go to the mall, but I have too much homework. “but” connects these two sentences or and but I have a dog and a cat. Kyla Kinnunen 10

11 Interjection An interjection is a word that shows excitement.
Interjections are usually short, such as one word or syllable. Examples: Hooray! I got an “A” on the test! Ouch! That really hurt! Hey! I know you! Wow! What a pretty view! Kyla Kinnunen 11
