2 Life During the Depression
Partner up with ONE OTHER PERSON! Title your poster: Life During the Great Depression Illustrations and 1-sentence explanations for each of the following: Dust Bowl Hobos The Wizard of Oz The Grapes of Wrath Hoovervilles Bread Lines Be Creative. 3 The Depression Worsens
By 1933: unemployment 25% and more than 9,000 banks failed. More than 12 million workers unemployed. Many families were forced to stand in bread lines or soup kitchens for food.

6 The Depression Worsens
Many families became homeless (couldn’t pay rent or mortgage.) Homeless put up shacks on public lands, called shantytowns, referred to as Hoovervilles. Many homeless began wandering the country (hobos), hitchhiking or “riding the rails” in search of work.

8 The Dust Bowl Farmers’ struggles in 1920’s left many acres of land uncultivated. That combined with drought and high winds created an environment with huge dust storms. Clouds of dust and dirt could raise 8,000 feet up and move up to 100 mph. Dust buried crops and livestock and forced farmers to leave farms and homes.

11 Few Americans Escape Hard Times
Men felt they were failures because they no longer provided for families. Some abandoned families & others committed suicide. Birth rates dropped to lowest in American history. Many children dropped out of school. First and only decade ever more people were leaving the U.S. than coming.

HOMEWORK: What movies and radio shows entertained Americans during the Depression? What subjects did artists, photographers, and writers concentrate on during the 1930’s? List and define all key terms/people in 22.2
