1 Initialization 1Turn the power switches to both the heater controller and the viscometer on (up). 2On heater controller turn C/F toggle switch to F (degrees Fahrenheit). 3 On heater controller, depress setpoint display switch and set to desired temperature using the Set Point knob (for the desired temperature, refer to the Sample Table in the Operation section of this procedure). 4Check bubble level to insure that the viscometer is level. 5Turn the viscometer on. When the power is turned on, the screen displays: BROOKFIELD DV-IT; RV VISCOMETER 6After a short time, the display will clear and the screen displays: BROOKFIELD DV-IT; VERSION 4.1 7After a short time, the display will clear and the screen displays: REMOVE SPINDLE; PRESS ANY KEY 8 Autozero the viscometer : Remove the spindle, press any key. The screen will flash “Autozeroing”. 9After 15 seconds, the flashing stops and the screen displays: REPLACE SPINDLE; PRESS ANY KEY 10Pressing any key brings you to the default screen. You are ready to run a Sample. All unused samples must be dumped into the Slop Tank on west side of Octane room. Quality Assurance  Proper sampling and analytical analysis are critical for maintaining proper product quality. Special Instructions  This procedure should be followed to determine viscosity of various samples.  Any problems, notify Shift Supervisor or Duane Chaisson. The desired fluid level is 1/8 inch on the spindle shaft. Because the “18” spindle is large relative to the others, much less sample is required (8ml). More sample is required when using the smaller spindles (31 and 34). 11Pour sample into sample cell and place in heater, making sure the bottom notch is locked into the notch at the bottom of the heater. 12Attach spindle to viscometer. 13After sample has been heated to a fluid state, slowly lower the spindle into the sample cell. 14 Lower the spindle until the tips of the alignment bracket just touch the locating ring, making contact behind the ring. Adjust the viscometer so that the tips of the alignment bracket are 1/16 to 1/8 inch above the horizontal surface behind the locating ring. 15Press SELECT SPINDLE key. The characters on the top line of the display will begin to blink. It will blink for about three seconds. 16Press either the UP or DOWN Arrow key to select the spindle size. 17When the desired spindle code is displayed, release the Arrow. 18Press the SELECT SPINDLE key again to lock in your selection. 19Press the MOTOR ON/OFF key to start the motor. 20 Select the speed. Select a speed so that the readout is on scale. The scale is from 0 to 100, and best results are obtained by adjusting the speed to yield a reading close to 50. 21Press the SET SPEED key. 22Press either the UP or DOWN Arrow key to see the currently selected speed. 23To change the speed, hold either the UP or DOWN Arrow key until the speed you want is displayed.  Procedure Completed Date: Prepared By: Approved By:

Gereighty39/10/073 of 3 Title of Procedure (continued) Operation 24Press the SET SPEED key to lock in your selection. 25After final speed adjustment, allow ample time (10 to 15 minutes) for the digital display on the viscometer to stabilize. 26Change heater setpoint to second desired temperature and allow time to stabilize. 27Adjust speed to yield a midpoint reading (about 50). 28Read viscosity in centipoise from screen. 29After final reading discard sample and clean sample cell and spindle with toluene.  Procedure Completed Date: Prepared By: Approved By:
