ENERGY

Turn to the very last page of your composition notebook. Write at the top of the page: Test Reflections Write on the first line: Test 2 Then answer these questions: *Which questions (and learning targets) did I miss? *Why did I miss those questions? (silly mistakes, didn't understand it, need more practice, etc.)

DO NOW MONDAY  List as many types of energy as you can.

WHAT IS ENERGY?  Energy is:  the ability to do work.  the ability to cause things to happen

PROPERTIES OF ENERGY 1. Energy is always conserved- it cannot be created or destroyed. This means the amount of energy in the universe is always CONSTANT.

PROPERTIES OF ENERGY 2. Energy can be transferred or transformed  Transferred (moved) from one object to another- it is still the same form of energy (ex. mechanical to mechanical)  Transformed (changed) into other, different forms (ex. mechanical to thermal)

DIFFERENT FORMS OF ENERGY Kinetic- energy of motionPotential- stored energy  Thermal Heat-due to motion of particles  Light/Solar Radiant (transferred as waves)  Electrical From electrons moving  Sound Transferred as waves  Mechanical Anything that has moving parts  Gravitational Energy an object has due to its height  Chemical Stored in the bonds that hold atoms together  Nuclear Stored in nucleus of atoms

DO NOW TUESDAY  What type of energy does a hair dryer involve?

RUBE GOLDBERG  Rube Goldberg was a very creative man.  He was a cartoonist, an engineer, an inventor, a sculptor, and a writer.  He had a “knack” for designing a very complex path to complete a very simple task.  His designs became known as “Rube Goldbergs”  The path to the completion of a task always contained many transfers and transformations of energy.

ANOTHER RUBE GOLDBERG DEVICE  A-B  B-C  C-D  D-E  E-F  F-G  G-H  H-I  I-J A B C D E F G H I J

Exit Slip Tuesday Does the picture show an energy transfer or transformation? Explain.

DO NOW WEDNESDAY Name the energy transfers/transformati ons that are happening in the Rube Goldberg device pictured. A-B= B-C= C-D= D-E= E-F= F-G= G-H=

DO NOW THURSDAY  For each picture (1-5), write the energy transformation taking place. 1 2 3 4 5

DO NOW THURSDAY Does the picture show an energy transfer or transformation? Explain.

DO NOW FRIDAY Does the picture show an energy transfer or transformation? Explain.
