3 Who was Copernicus? NICOLAUS COPERNICUS Polish Mathematician  His ideas would changed the way people viewed the universe  Was the first to disagree with Ptolemy  Proposed a HELIOCENTRIC universe Sun centered

4 What did the Church have to say? Copernicus realized his ideas would cause a conflict with the church… He could face arrest of EXCOMMUNICATION He worked in secret and did not publish his ideas until near the end of his life Being thrown out of the church

5 Did anyone believe Copernicus? JOHANNES KEPLER German Mathematician  Supported Copernicus’ theory  Used mathematical formulas to show planet orbits  Was a Protestant – so he did not fear the Catholic Church

6 What was Galileo's role? GALILEO GALILEI Italian scientist ► Lived in Italy – the home of the Catholic Church ► Built an improved telescope ► Discovered clear evidence of a heliocentric universe

7 How did the Church feel about Galileo? When Galileo published his findings, the Catholic Church charged him with HERESY anti-church teachings He was placed on house arrest, his books were burned, and he did the rest of his work in secret But, it was too late – his ideas would spread rapidly around the world!
