2 Contributing factors: 17th century was a century marked by war, revolution, rationalism, and skepticism Brought out of that period by new ideas: Excavation of ancient ruins (Herculaneum and Pompeii) caused excitement in discovery of ancient worlds Aesthetic theory was introduced as “ the study of beauty and theory of art. ” A return to antiquity and the simplicity of nature (seen most in landscape art)

3 Rococo Style Decorative and nonfunctional Informality replaced formality in life and painting Baroque seen as too academic and lacking in feeling and sensitivity New themes: Love, friendship, sentiment, pleasure, and melodrama.
