Regent, Philippe d'Orléans, who governed France for Louis XV (until 1723) was interested in amusement and pleasure Government moved from Versailles to Paris – French nobility move back to Paris and beyond – reassert themselves Reject heavy ornate Baroque style associated with Louis XIV and Versailles

3 Characteristics of Rococo Lighter, more delicate Lovely textures, opulence; expense Feathery foliage; fantasy landscapes Thoughtful; poetic dimension Associated mostly with decorative arts: pastel colors; irregular, curvilinear shapes (based on plant forms); delicate lines, soft textures. Love of sensuous colors, fluid forms, lively movement Everything treated with a lighter touch; light-hearted; light-headed. ;) PLEASURE-LOVING ARISTOCRACY Artists: Watteau; Fragonard
