3 Activity 1 Think, Pair, Share What do you think a learning disability is? How long might someone have had a learning disability? What kind of support might someone with a learning disability need?

4 Definition of Learning Disability A learning disability is a lifelong condition which begins in childhood and affects how a person develops as he or she grows up into adulthood. People with learning disabilities need help to: understand information learn new skills cope independently

5 Activity 2 Individual note-taking task What does ‘Learning Disability’ mean? Listen once without writing. Listen again but focus on one person and write down what they have to say about their learning disability. CLICK ON THE IMAGE TO VIEW AND LISTEN

6 Activity 3 Remember Ellis? He is going to tell us about his weekend, and his mum is going to tell us about ‘getting him off’ to school. This is Jack. He has multiple learning disabilities. His sister Karly is going to tell us a little about what this means. CLICK ON IMAGE TO VIEW

8 Activity 1 Think, Pair, Share What skills do you think would be required to carry out the following? Reading a text message Counting money Participating in a board game Playing a Nintendo game Getting dressed Walking upstairs Taking part in a group discussion

9 Activity 2 Are there some tasks that you carry out which you find difficult and make you feel frustrated? Have a go at the following brain Teasers:

10 Cut up copies of the Egyptian alphabet. Write a message to your pair-partner using the hieroglyphics and see how long it takes to decipher it! Language Game

11 Card Game Ask one person from your group to stand outside the classroom while you explain the rules to the rest of the group. Take a pack of playing cards and place them in the middle of the table. One person should turn the cards over one by one. As they do so, the rest of the group must: Clap their hands when they see a heartStand up and sit down when they see a spade Touch their nose when they see a clubShake their head when they see a diamond Once the group is clear about the rules then ask the ‘outsider’ to rejoin your group and invite them to play the game without explaining the instructions. Now ask the person to explain how they felt when they were participating. Make a note of the words they use to describe their feelings and emotions.
