1 Pre-judging prejudice & Discrimination How does society create stereotypes and what do we do about it? Students will be identify the various types of stereotyping and discrimination. Students will be able to identify targets, perpetrators, allies and bystanders in a moment of discrimination. Students will be able to identify discrimination in their own lives and explore viewpoints on disrupting injustice. Resource For Teachers:

PUT IT ON PAPER: Summarize what happened in this activity. Interpret what Ms. Vance was really doing and how did participants respond? Respond to this situation describing your personal feelings?

4 Prejudice = pre-judging (stereotypes)
When we prejudge we make an opinion about a person because they belong to a particular group: What are the three things that define stereotyping? Make a list of the stereotypes that people imposed on the two witnesses. Make a list of the stereotypes that the two witnesses imposed on other people. Stereotypes List Stereotypes imposed on witnesses Stereotypes imposed on others

Before you watch: What are your pre-judgments of Africa? After you watch: Is it true that Africa has poverty and disease? Does all of Africa have poverty and disease? What is the danger of a single story?

6 Iceberg Identity List aspects of your identity that could be seen by a stranger upon first meeting you. List aspects of your identity that lie beneath the surface. These are the things people have to learn about you in person.

Task: Look through the text that we’ve read so far. Find and summarize an example of injustice (select a quote) and identify the: Target Perpetrator Ally Bystander

12 The Conflict List times you’ve been stereotyped or you stereotyped someone else that resulted in discrimination. Write your list in chronological order. He wouldn’t go to the dance with me because I had glasses.
