Embedding- the trialling of different models Christina Gera and Marg Cartner Wintec, SLS. ATLAANZ, Napier, November 2013

Embedding practice pre-2013 SLS Wintec Embedded workshops – for some courses beginning of semesters, for some before assignments were due, orientations, School of Trades – Learning Advisor embedded in classes with the intention of encouraging students to attend one-to-one sessions with SLS LA (literacy & numeracy assistance)..

Our approach To be proactive – rather than reactive To build student academic capability To continue building relationships with tutors

Strategic move 2013 – 18 programmes of concern Programmes identified: – Overall – Maori/Pacifika – International students Rationale: to embed into classes where we can make the biggest difference Contacting staff – Choose staff already know – Programmes of concern were a starting point – Mainly a bottom-up approach

18 programmes of concern – different models of embedding Attending lectures Attending tutorials to participation Giving literacy/academic literacy workshops in class time Embedding Moodle approach

18 programmes of concern – more than one approach per course Bachelor of Dip Technology (Science) Embedded in lectures – to identify issues Study skills workshop – 2hrs outside of class time Met with HOD and discussed difficulties EAL students were having Attended staff meeting to discuss issues EAL students having Invited to attend a tutorial class to assist EAL learners (lots in this class)

18 programmes of concern – more than one approach per course Our learning advisor received requests to help with biology essay. Passed information onto lecturer who addressed this in class Our LA gained permission for EAL learners to take self made vocab list into test LA took biology tutorials for EAL students LA did a teaching observation of one of the classes and feed back suggestions to lecturer

Moved on Continuing to build new relationships with staff so can be embedded in programmes 8 areas across Wintec - workshops and tutorials attendance/participation Compulsory group appointments for Masters & Postgraduate international students – Student led group tutoring model being developed in some courses – Staff capability included in approach
