The War Continues Chapter 6 - Lesson 1

Congress and the Colonies  Congress did not have full support of colonies  Colonies did not want to give up power  Revolutionary War was like 13 separate wars  Each colony fought for their own desires

The Continental Army  Local militia were major part  Made up largely of farmers  More trained recruits were also brought on  Most soldiers only signed up for 1 year  Had a hard time finding officers to lead

Early Campaigns  As full war began, British sent 32,000 troops  Commanded by General Howe

Patriot Defeat on Long Island  August 1776 = Patriots army was crushed by British  Nathan Hale - American Spy - Hanged for espionage  “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”  Washington retreated to Pennsylvania

Low Point for Patriots  Continental Army shrank from 20,000 to 5,000  Troops either completed terms or ran away  Washington begged Congress for more troops  Washington asked for free African Americans to be able to enlist  Southern colonies opposed this

African Americans in Battle  Rhode Island raised an all-African American regiment  By the end of the war, every state allowed African Americans to fight but SC  About 5,000 joined the Patriots

Battle of Trenton Sneak attack on Dec. 25, 1776 Washington crosses the Delaware at night HUGE victory for colonial morale Washington seen as hero

British Strategy  Early 1777 British planned 3 part battle plan  Goal was to take Albany, NY  Albany controlled the Hudson River  Plan was to cut colonies off from New England British Battle Plan for Albany 1. General John Burgoyne would lead troops south from Canada 2. Lt. Colonel Barry St. Leger would move east from Lake Ontario 3. General Howe would move North from Hudson ^ We will see how this battle plan actually plays out

British Capture Philadelphia  Before moving to Albany, General Howe marched on Philadelphia  Howe won key battles around Philadelphia and captured the city in the winter  Decided to stay in Philadelphia for the Winter (how does this change the British battle plan for Albany?)

Battle of Saratoga  Benedict Arnold defeats St. Leger at Fort Stanwix, NY (how does this affect the Albany battle plan?)  Burgoyne was defeated by the “Green Mountain Boys” and fled to Saratoga (how does this affect the Albany battle plan?)  General Horatio Gates blockaded General Burgoyne  Burgoyne tried to fight back but failed  October 17, 1777 Burgoyne surrenders  MAJOR victory for colonies  British Albany Battle Plan fails = changes tide of the war!!!!!!!
