A global multidisciplinary network on housing research and learning GROWTH / SHRINKAGE Adeline Thys, Clara Van Geel, Maciej Sidorowicz, Saman Hariri KU Leuven (@LUCA) COTTBUS, 1-6th June, 2015 Second International Workshop

Task 1: research – Causes – Impacts Task 2: concept and contexts of growth and shrinkage – Austin, Texas – Detroit, Michigan – Antwerp – Roesbrugge – Warsaw – Lodz – Tehran – Shooshtar-e-no Cottbus Workshop SUMMARY

TASK 1: RESEARCH Cottbus Workshop CAUSESIMPACTS GROWTH-Industry -Urbanization -Migration to the city - Higher economic production -Many job opportunities - Uncontrolled growth -> urban sprawl SHRINKAGE-Political changes - Deindustrialisation -Suburbanization - Economic shock - High unemployment rates - Relocation of industry and services - Emigration of the working age - Vacant buildings and plots

TASK 1: RESEARCH Cottbus Workshop Growth + shrinkage = related to each other Dynamic of cities Genius loci, complexity of factors Inspiring strategies Every situation needs its own design approach Conclusions task 1

TASK 2: CONCEPTS & CONTEXTS OF GROWTH AND SHRINKAGE Cottbus Workshop GROWTHAustin, TexasAntwerpWarsawTehran SHRINKAGEDetroit, Michigan RoesbruggeLodzShooshtar-e-no WEST ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EAST

TASK 2: CONCEPTS & CONTEXTS / GROWTH / AUSTIN, TEXAS Cottbus Workshop Austin: By 2040, 138% GROWTH = 4 million residents

TASK 2: CONCEPTS & CONTEXTS / SHRINKAGE / DETROIT, MICHIGAN Cottbus Workshop Detroit: SHRINKAGE, 710.000 residents In top 20 largest American cities

Antwerp, 20th century ring 100 000 extra residents TASK 2: CONCEPTS & CONTEXTS / BELGIUM / GROWTH / ANTWERP

Roesbrugge TASK 2: CONCEPTS & CONTEXTS / BELGIUM / SHRINKAGE / ROESBRUGGE

Tehran TASK 2: CONCEPTS & CONTEXTS / GROWTH / TEHRAN

Shooshtar-e-No TASK 2: CONCEPTS & CONTEXTS / SHRINKAGE / SHOOSHTAR-E-NO

Warsaw, Wilanow TASK 2: CONCEPTS & CONTEXTS / POLAND / GROWTH / WARSAW

Lodz, Manufaktura TASK 2: CONCEPTS & CONTEXTS / POLAND / GROWTH / WARSAW

Cottbus Workshop CONCLUSIONS These are the conclusions: There are many ways to deal with growth and shrinkage Growth and shrinkage are strictly related to each other. An important cause of both is the transformation in field of industry and/or politics Increasing economies in one place may cause decreasing economies in another place. Every situation is unique and needs its own design approach GROWTH: focus on protection of green zones and control of the density level SHRINKAGE: focus on flexibility and adaptability, new ideas of revitalisation and adaptations, mix-usage schemes
