Answer ONE question on your chosen text Write your answer in the space provided You must select your second poem from the prescribed poems listed in the Source Booklet on page 2 1. Compare the ways in which poets explore the modern world in Ode to a Grayson Perry Urn by Tim Turnbull and one other poem of your choice from Poems of the Decade: An Anthology of the Forward Books of Poetry In your answer you should consider the following: the poets’ development of themes the poets’ use of language and imagery the use of other poetic techniques. (Total for Question 1 = 25 marks)

Speaker and Voice All poems have a voice, which can be called a speaker (or in some case speakers, if there is more than one person “speaking” the poem).

Tone and Mood Tone, in written composition, is an attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience. Tone is generally conveyed through the choice of words or the viewpoint of a writer on a particular subject. Mood is the atmosphere of a literary piece, as it creates an emotional situation that surrounds the readers. Mood is developed in a literary piece through various methods. It can be developed through setting, theme, tone and diction.

Imagery Imagery is when a writer appeals to the reader’s senses in order to build a picture or create a sensation for them.

Symbols and Motifs Symbolism is the practice of representing things by means of symbols or of attributing symbolic meanings or significance to objects, events, or relationships. A motif a dominant or recurring idea in an artistic work.

WRITE THIS INTO YOUR NOTEBOOK! Getting other Interpretations Read guides to your poem where available. Imagine this poem from an alien perspective or an alternative perspective to your own. Set up a study group and discuss the ideas in the poem.

Personal Opinion Try to develop your own ideas about the poem. Ask yourself what you have learned from the poem. Link them to other poems. Do this by filling out the table provided in your pack.
