What Science is Not

1. It is not a process that seeks the truth. (The goal of science is to come as close as we can to understanding the cause and realities of the natural world.)

2. It is not a process that attempts to prove things. (Science actually attempts to disprove ideas. If the idea passes the testing, then it is more likely to be a good explanation).

3. It is not a process that produces absolute facts. (Science is a process that can only produce possible to highly-probable explanations).

4. It is not a process that can always be relied on. (Science can be done poorly and mistakes can be made).

5. It is not a process that is always properly used. (Science is frequently misused as in “pseudosciences”

6. It is not a process where understanding is based on faith or belief. (Explanations are always based on observations).

7. It is not a process where it is simply a matter of opinion. (It requires lines of evidence that lead to that best solution.)

8. Scientific theories are not “tentative ideas” or “hunches” (The word theory is often used this way in everyday conversation, but a theory in science refers to a well-tested explanation for a large number of observations.
