1 A organic compound mystery lab
Who stole aaron’s ipod A organic compound mystery lab

2 Lab objectives Use chemical indicators to determine what organic compound is in a particular food Accurately collect and record data using tables Determine who stole Aaron’s Ipod using the chemical composition of a particular food and comparing it with the evidence food and the lunch eaten by each of Aaron’s co-workers.

3 What organic compounds do you think they contain?
Pretzels Cheese Butter Jelly Fat-free yogurt Beans –mashed Foods to be tested What organic compounds do you think they contain?

4 Paper bags for the Lipid Test Well-plates to hold food for the Biuret and Iodine Tests Test tubes and rack for Benedict’s Test

5 Benedict’s test for Glucose
Benedict’s initial color is blue and will change to orange if glucose is present. These tubes are showing a negative result.

6 Brown bag Lipid Test Food will be rubbed on bag with excess wiped off and air dried. Food with translucent grease spot is positive result

7 Foods from left to Right are yogurt, pretzels, jelly, butter, cheese and beans

8 Starting the Iodine and Biuret TEst
Examine the two colors that each indicator can be. Iodine – orange Biuret - blue

9 Foods being tested using Iodine and Biuret Solution
Foods being tested using Iodine and Biuret Solution. What color shows a starch and protein?

11 Nutritional information

12 Determine the organic compounds in the foods that each co-worker ate
Data Analysis Determine the organic compounds in the foods that each co-worker ate

13 Lunch he or she was eating
Who stole Aaron’s Ipod? Worker in break room Lunch he or she was eating Glucose Starch Protein Lipid Jose Bean burrito with cheese  x Ashley Fat-Free Yogurt Bruce Toast with butter and jelly Kiara Pretzel Possible Thief Evidence 1 and 2

14 Results for the Lipid Test

15 Post Lab Questions Think about Questions 5 and 6 on lab.
Complete the table in the lab that summarizes the evidence and interpretation of the evidence. What happened to Aarons Ipod? Explain

16 Energy in Food Energy in food is measured in Calories.
Carbohydrates provide 4 Calories per gram Proteins provide 4 Calories per gram Lipids provide 9 Calories per gram Calculating food Calories Read the food label. Determine the number of grams per serving for a given organic compound. Multiple the number of grams by the number of calories/g for the given food. Let’s practice…

17 1. What is the total Calories for one serving?
2. What is the number of Calories from Fat? 3. How many Calories come from Protein? 4. How many Calories come from Carbohydrates1?’ 5. Is Sodium an organic compound? 6. Name the two types of fats.
