MYP Humanities Psychology Week 5

Monday, September 28, 2009 Objectives: Students will review basic information about psychology by reviewing test #1. Opener: What are three things you learned while I was gone? What went well? What didn’t go well? Anything I should know before I grade your work? Activities: 1)Complete Opener. Copy Homework. 2)Review Test. 3)The Central Nervous System: powerpoint Homework: Complete another article about the Brain. (see handout– due Wednesday). ALSO, complete library form (due Tuesday).

Tuesday, September 29, 2009 Objectives: Students will get library card and will learn about the brain and gender. Activities: 1)In the library – complete handouts on brain teasers/optical illusions and on men and memory (article with questions) Homework: complete analysis of article

Wednesday, September 30, 2009 Objectives: Students will identify and describe the components of the Nervous System. Opener: What is the definition of psychology? So why are we studying the body and the brain? Activities: 1)Complete Opener. Copy Homework. 2)Review Opener. 3)The Nervous System: Guided Notes Homework: Read about Phineas Gage. Answer question at the bottom of the page.

The Nervous System Consists of the Central Nervous System and the Peripheral Nervous System The Peripheral Nervous System consists of the Somatic Nervous System (from the senses) and the Autonomic Nervous System (regulates vital functions) The Autonomic Nervous System consists of the sympathetic (reactions to stresses) and the parasympathetic (restoration of peace)

NERVOUS SYSTEM Divisisons of Nervous System

Central Nervous System Brain and Spinal Cord –Thick as a thumb –Protected by spine –Transmits messages –Spinal reflex: simple automatic response

REFLEX ARC

Neurons Way to communicate between nerve cells 100 billion of them (mostly in the brain) Look like trees in a forest OR lie end to end Can be very small or several feet long

Neurons

Structure of Neurons Cell Body: produces energy that makes it active Dendrites: thin fibers that branch out from cell, receive messages, multiple per neuron Axon: covered in myelin, carry messages away, usually only one per neuron, vary in length, axon terminals at the ends

Types of Neurons Sensory: from the senses to the Central Nervous System Motor: from the Central Nervous System TO the muscles and glands

How do Neurons Communicate? Messages are sent from the axon terminals of one neuron to the dendrites of another Cross the synapse Only travel in one direction You form new synapses when you learn new things Sent by neurotransmitters – chemicals in the axon terminals

Neurotransmitters (these are only a few – there are dozens) Acetylcholine: control of muscles – spinal cord/skeletal muscles Dopamine: motor behavior Noradrenaline: action Serotonin: emotions and sleep
