Mind Stretcher 12-12-14 1. What do substances pass through in the cell membrane? – Capillaries – Tubules – Pores – Gates 2. Another word for “equilibrium” is ______. – Change – Unevenness – Unequal – Balance *Get out one sheet of paper and #1-10 with title: “Passive Transport Quiz”

Mind Stretcher - Monday 1. The process a plant uses in order to create glucose is called ____________. 2. Cellular respiration is the process by which a. plant cells create glucose. b. cells grow and reproduce. c. cells use oxygen to produce energy from food. d. cells breakdown food without using oxygen. Photosynthesis ”

Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration What do we already know?

Cell Energy (Photosynthesis and Respiration) Notes Energy: Energy for living things comes from food. Originally, the energy in food comes from the sun.

Organisms that use light energy from the sun to produce food—autotrophs (auto = self) Ex: plants and some microorganisms (some bacteria and protists)

Organisms that CANNOT use the sun’s energy to make food—heterotrophs Ex: animals and most microorganisms

AdenineRibose 3 Phosphate groups Cell Energy: Cells usable source of energy is called ATP ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate

Photosynthesis: Photosynthesis is the process by which the energy of sunlight is converted into the energy of glucose carbon dioxide + water + light glucose + oxygen 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + light C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2

Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts of plants Chlorophyll is the pigment inside it that absorbs sunlight

As the chlorophyll in leaves decays in the autumn, the green color fades and is replaced by the oranges and reds of carotenoids.

CHLOROPLASTS. Performs photosynthesis. It will take water and carbon dioxide, and change it in to oxygen & glucose… it’s a very simple process. CO₂ H₂O O₂ Glucose Click to return to main page

Products Light H 2 O Water O 2 Oxygen C 6 H 12 O 6 Glucose Chloroplast NADP+ ADP + P ATP NADPH (What is needed or Taken in) (What is created/produced) CO 2 Carbon Dioxide Reactants

Cellular Respiration: (2 kinds—Aerobic and Anaerobic) Cellular respiration- the energy of glucose is released in the cell. Used for life processes (movement, breathing, blood circulation, etc…)

Cells require a constant source of energy for life processes but keep only a small amount of ATP on hand. Cells can regenerate ATP as needed by using the energy stored in foods like glucose. The energy stored in glucose by photosynthesis is released by cellular respiration and repackaged into the energy of ATP.

Respiration occurs in ALL cells and can take place either with or without oxygen present.

Glucose + OxygenCarbon Dioxide + Water

MITOCHONDRIA Takes Glucose and oxygen and will transform it into ATP, Carbon dioxide, and Water. Glucose O2O2 H2OH2O ATP Click to return to main page

Fermentation Fermentation- Cellular respiration without oxygen! Occurs when bacteria breaks down plants and produces alcohol and vinegar. In humans, it causes the build up of lactic-acid. This causes you to be sore after a tough workout.

Super Sleuth: Find someone who knows… Definition for diffusion: What is the difference between osmosis and diffusion? Photosynthesis takes in what gas? Where do plants get their energy? Name for energy created thru respiration: Cellular respiration releases what gas? What are the 2 types of active transport? Photosynthesis releases what gas? Cellular respiration takes in what gas?
