4 Apprenticeships and ‘Apprenticeships-Lite’ Apprenticeships  A formal training programme  Recruited to a job with training (employee status)  Training in the workplace and an educational establishment  Explicit legally binding contract  Awarded a certificate to work in a specific occupation or group of occupations  Tightly regulated and often backed by legislation.  Social partner (collective employer bodies and trade unions) involvement  Mutually beneficial to employer and apprentice Traineeships/Internships/ Pre-apprenticeships etc  Work placement an element in VET programmes  But temporary and fairly short  Lead to formal qualifications  And can lead to an apprenticeship proper  But less likely to follow a defined learning programme or outcomes  More heterogenous: –For unemployed young people; or –An mainly education based programme –Or poorly paid ‘internships’ for the better off  Part of the strengthening of employer dimension to VET  And becoming more the norm  Employer benefits variable
