Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are a complex set of neurological disorders that severely impair social, communicative and cognitive functions. Though a thorough understanding of the science behind and treatment methodologies for autism is difficult, the basic understanding of these concepts is paramount to spreading awareness of ASD. Facts About Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are a complex set of neurological disorders that severely impair social, communicative and cognitive functions. Individuals with ASD suffer from cognitive impairments, though some have typical or above average IQs. Typical ASD behaviors include stereotyped actions (hand flapping, body rocking), insistence on sameness, resistance to change and, in some cases, aggression or self-injury. Between 30-50% of people with autism have seizures. Autism was originally believed to be a form of schizophrenia brought on by a traumatic experience or bad parenting. This is not the case. 6 Visual Aids- Students with Autism learn well with visual aids. they can see what is going on throughout the day. With this they know what to prepare for and what activity they will be doing next. Structure- Structure reduces stress, confusion, anxiety and behavior problems by making things predictable. This can lead to independence and builds on the child’s strengths. strategies to help

Through twin studies, scientists have determined that autism is a genetically based condition. For example, if one identical twin has autism then there is an 80-90% chance that the other twin will also be diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. The chance that fraternal twins will both be affected by ASD if one twin is affected is approximately 3-10%. Scientists are unsure what, if any, environmental triggers may be involved in autism. Beliefs in the late 1990s and early 2000s that vaccines may cause autism have since been disproven through numerous studies. That No one is sure what causes autism. 11 Early Signs Of Autism

The Different Disorders

Autism was first described by Dr. Leo Kanner in 1943. He reported on eleven children who showed a marked lack of interest in other people, but a highly unusual interest in the inanimate environment. Who Diagnosed Autism

It is possible to detect signs of autism in infants as young as 6-18 months. For example, if a baby fixates on objects or does not respond to people, he or she may be exhibiting early signs of an autism spectrum disorder. Older babies and toddlers may fail to respond to their names, avoid eye contact, lack joint attention, or engage in repetitive movements such as rocking, or arm flapping. They may play with toys in unusual ways. Parents who notice these signs, or are concerned their children are not meeting developmental milestones, should contact their pediatricians and request a developmental screening. 18 For many children, symptoms improve with treatment and with age. Children whose language skills regress early in life—before the age of 3—appear to have a higher than normal risk of developing epilepsy or seizure-like brain activity. During adolescence, some children with an ASD may become depressed or experience behavioral problems, and their treatment may need some modification as they transition to adulthood. People with an ASD usually continue to need services and supports as they get older, but many are able to work successfully and live independently or within a supportive environment. 19 functions like interpreting touch, vision and hearing, as well as speech, reasoning, emotions, learning, and fine control of movement. The cerebellum is located under the cerebrum. Its function is to coordinate muscle movements, maintain posture, and balance. The brainstem includes the midbrain, pons, and medulla. It acts as a relay center connecting the cerebrum and cerebellum to the spinal cord. It performs many automatic functions such as breathing, heart rate, body temperature, wake and sleep cycles, digestion, sneezing, coughing, vomiting, and swallowing. Ten of the twelve cranial nerves originate in the brainstem. The surface of the cerebrum has a folded appearance called the cortex. The cortex contains about 70% of the 100 billion nerve cells. The nerve cell bodies color the cortex grey-brown giving it its name – gray matter Beneath the cortex are long connecting fibers between neurons, called axons, which make up the white matter. Autism impacts the brain’s ability to process information by altering how nerve cells and their synapses organize. The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain and is composed of right and left hemispheres. It performs higher Autism Brain And Normal Brain

There is a cure for Autism Spectrum Disorders. Therapies and behavioral interventions are designed to remedy specific symptoms and can bring about substantial improvement. The ideal treatment plan coordinates therapies and interventions that meet the specific needs of individual children. Most health care professionals agree that the earlier the intervention, the better. Educational/behavioral interventions: Therapists use highly structured and intensive skill- oriented training sessions to help children develop social and language skills, such as Applied Behavioral Analysis. Family counseling for the parents and siblings of children with an ASD often helps families cope with the particular challenges of living with a child with an ASD. Medications: Doctors may prescribe medications for treatment of specific autism-related symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Antipsychotic medications are used to treat severe behavioral problems. Seizures can be treated with one or more anticonvulsant drugs. Medication used to treat people with attention deficit disorder can be used effectively to help decrease impulsivity and hyperactivity. Other therapies: There are a number of controversial therapies or interventions available, but few, if any, are supported by scientific studies. Parents should use caution before adopting any unproven treatments. Although dietary interventions have been helpful in some children, parents should be careful that their child’s nutritional status is carefully followed. How is autism Treated ?

I was diagnosed with Autism at the age of seven half years old. My parents didn't know that I had Autism until I was hospitalized at roger memorial hospital for my meltdown and aggressive behaviors, mood and my anxiety. That’s when my parents found out I had Autism. I used to physically attack people, destroy property and swearing. I was hospitalized twelve times for my aggressive behaviors. I had a in home family therapy that help me with my daily living skills, home work and took me out in the community. I had to go to see a psychiatrist at children hospital and they put me on medicine for my behavior, mood and anxiety. When I turned 12 years old I stop going to the hospital because I was improving my behavior. The older I got I was able to control my behavior and anger. This is my life experiment with Autism. I am proud to have Autism. By William Davis My Autism Story

In recent years, research has greatly advanced our understanding of the genetics and genomics of brain development and function. The term genetics describes the study of individual genes. Made of DNA, genes “code,” or provide instructions, for building the proteins that make up our body and direct its growth and function. The related term genomics refers to an individual’s entire set of genes together with the factors that coordinate gene activity at different times and places during development and life. Generally speaking, genomic research relies on powerful new technologies. Why Autism Speaks Funds Genetics and Genomics Autism Speaks funds genetic and genomic research to advance understanding of autism in ways that can lead to improved diagnosis and treatment. Genetic research has also transformed our understanding what causes or contributes to the development of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Already, genetic testing has become an important part of autism diagnosis and care. Often, it can guide treatment of autism and associated medical conditions such as epilepsy. Genetic testing is particularly important for detecting a number of syndromes associated with autism. These include fragile X syndrome, Angelman syndrome, tuberous sclerosis complex, chromosome 15q duplication syndrome, Pheland-McDermid syndrome and DiGeorge syndrome. Clinicians can now identify the genetic basis of ASD in 10 to 20 percent of cases. We expect these figures to grow dramatically in the coming years as genetic discoveries continue to accelerate. 28 In many families, there appears to be a pattern of autism or related disabilities, further supporting the theory that the disorder has a genetic basis. While no one gene has been identified as causing autism, researchers are searching for irregular segments of genetic code that children with autism may have inherited. Is Autism A Genetic

Parents and autism specialists have long reported that many children and adults with autism also struggle with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression or both. Now researchers have found shared genetic risk factors between autism, ADHD, schizophrenia, major depression and bipolar disorder. The findings come out of the largest-ever genetic study of neurodevelopmental disorders and psychiatric illnesses. It appears online in the journal Lancet. The researchers looked at genetic information on more than 60,000 people of mostly European ancestry. In doing so, they found that changes, or mutations, in four distinct genetic areas were significantly more common in people with any one of these five disorders of brain function. Two of the alterations were in genes that appear to be involved in balancing calcium levels in brain cells. (Calcium plays a role in communication between cells.) “This is a noteworthy study long in the making,” says Andy Shih, Ph.D., Autism Speaks senior vice president of scientific affairs. “It confirms many of the ideas that have been advanced in recent years and points to opportunities to development novel treatments based on shared biological pathways." 30 Anxiety is a normal human emotion that everyone experiences at times. Many people feel anxious, or nervous, when faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or making an important decision. Anxiety disorders, however, are different. They can cause such distress that it interferes with a person's ability to lead a normal life. An anxiety disorder is a serious mental illness. For people with anxiety disorders, worry and fear are constant and overwhelming, and can be crippling. anxiety

There are several recognized types of anxiety disorders, including: Panic disorder: People with this condition have feelings of terror that strike suddenly and repeatedly with no warning. Other symptoms of a panic attack include sweating, chest pain, palpitations (unusually strong or irregular heartbeats), and a feeling of choking, which may make the person feel like he or she is having a heart attack or "going crazy." Social anxiety disorder: Also called social phobia, social anxiety disorder involves overwhelming worry and self-consciousness about everyday social situations. The worry often centers on a fear of being judged by others, or behaving in a way that might cause embarrassment or lead to ridicule. Specific phobias: A specific phobia is an intense fear of a specific object or situation, such as snakes, heights, or flying. The level of fear is usually inappropriate to the situation and may cause the person to avoid common, everyday situations. Generalized anxiety disorder: This disorder involves excessive, unrealistic worry and tension, even if there is little or nothing to provoke the anxiety. Type of anxiety

The exact cause of anxiety disorders is unknown; but anxiety disorders -- like other forms of mental illness -- are not the result of personal weakness, a character flaw, or poor upbringing. As scientists continue their research on mental illness, it is becoming clear that many of these disorders are caused by a combination of factors, including changes in the brain and environmental stress. Like other brain illnesses, anxiety disorders may be caused by problems in the functioning of brain circuits that regulate fear and other emotions. Studies have shown that severe or long-lasting stress can change the way nerve cells within these circuits transmit information from one region of the brain to another. Other studies have shown that people with certain anxiety disorders have changes in certain brain structures that control memories linked with strong emotions. In addition, studies have shown that anxiety disorders run in families, which means that they can at least partly be inherited from one or both parents, like the risk for heart disease or cancer. Moreover, certain environmental factors -- such as a trauma or significant event -- may trigger an anxiety disorder in people who have an inherited susceptibility to developing the disorder.
