1  Starter – Buddhists believe being reborn as a human is as likely as a blind turtle, swimming in a large ocean and surfacing once every hundred years, putting its head through a small golden ring on the surface of the water.  Explain what this says about a Buddhist view on abortion? (3)  Starter extension – jot down key Buddhist words that might be relevant here.  Learning Objectives:-  To know and understand how Buddhist teachings apply to abortion.  To evaluate whether Buddhists believe that abortion is wrong.

2  Complete questions in exercise books using information on the sheet.  Extension – use information from the textbook to add to the tables.

3  What might a Buddhist do and why?  Scenario 1 – A foetus at 8 weeks after conception is found to have a genetic defect that would mean it would be born deaf and blind.  Scenario 2 – A pregnant woman feels she cannot financially or emotionally support a new baby.  Scenario 3 – If an abortion is not performed, a woman’s life is at risk.
