Chapter 3 Molecules, Compounds, & Chemical Equations CHE 123: General Chemistry I Dr. Jerome Williams, Ph.D. Saint Leo University

Overview Combustion Reactions Introduction to Organic Compounds

Combustion Reactions Combustion reaction refers to a substance combining with oxygen to form one or more oxygen-containing compounds. If substance is an organic compound hydrocarbon, then the products are carbon dioxide and water.

Combustion Reactions Example CH 4 (g) + 2 O 2 (g)  CO 2 (g) + 2 H 2 O (g)

Introduction to Organic Compounds Early chemists distinguished between organic and inorganic compounds. – Organic materials were only associated with living systems while inorganic compounds could be made in the laboratory.

Introduction to Organic Compounds Organic chemistry deals with the chemistry of carbon containing compounds. Carbon is unique because it has the ability to bond with itself forming chain, branched, and ring structures.

Introduction to Organic Compounds Hydrocarbons – compounds that contain only carbon and hydrogen. – Alkanes contain only C-H single bonds. – Alkenes contain one C=C double bond. – Alkynes contain one C ≡ C triple bond.

Introduction to Organic Compounds Functionalized hydrocarbons contain a functional group which is a characteristic atom or group of atoms that are incorporated into the hydrocarbon. The functional group gives rise to the unique chemistry found in each organic family.
