Gender aspects of access: past, present and future. Margaret Grieco, Professor of Transport and Society, Transport Research Institute, Napier University

Gender aspects of access: first base The majority of transport research is neither undertaken nor communicated with attention to gender disaggregation of data or the investigation of the gendering of social process of mobility. There are no substantial gendered transport data bases in the public domain. Accessibility methodologies and data bases have been developed and operated without the adequate prioritisation of gender

Gender aspects of access: second base The under-representation of women in transport professional and decision making space parallels the under-representation of gender and is a significant area for transport research inquiry.

Gender aspects of access: changing the game logic There is an evidenced need for gendered data in respect of transport operation and policy. The major institutional agencies have declared the importance of achieving gender equity goals and of developing the evidence base for delivering such goals. However, the construction of substantial data bases in the field of gender and transport has not been undertaken.

Gender aspects of access: making use of existing evidence Existing evidence on gender and transport provides sufficient ground for the funding of substantial data bases, the construction of new methodologies, the integration of these methodologies and perspectives into the normal science of transport and the reshaping of the profession.

Gender aspects of access: the development of a technical field The development of the technical field around the gendered aspects of access has been truncated and blocked by the past legacy of transport paradigms. Whilst there are many excellent case studies which indicate the gender aspects of access, these understandings are not routintely incorporated into transport planning and transport operations protocols and procedures.

Gender aspects of access: tools emerging from international development Gender audits, gender responsive budgets and gender checklists can all be used to produce a more systematic approach to the gender dimension of access. The combination of institutional pressures with easy to adopt and streamlined research protocols around gender would benefit the development of the field and provide for better tuning between transport provision and the end user.

Gender aspects of access: end user participation in planning End user participation in planning is critical to ensuring that other aspects of access are recognised and attended to.

Gender aspects of access: charting accessibility in a complex environment Gender, complex scheduling and activity patterns and compound accessibility. Environmental goals and the intensification of household scheduling pressures. Temporal, spatial and relational dimensions of accessibility Accessibility and equity: benchmarks and benchmarking

Gender aspects of access: Europe’s data failure, Europe’s policy challenge. The need of a stable technical home for gendered mobility research. The importance of developing comparative data bases on gender and transport. The utility of a gender and transport on line atlas. The development of transport policy with an explicit perspective on gender equity and inclusion

Gender aspects of access: a Brechtian chorus I would like to use the remaining time to talk through with you actions which can be taken to rectify the existing state of the art and generate a more equitable transport and mobility future. For those who want to follow up on these ideas written at some length elsewhere please to http://www.geocities.com/gender_and_transp ort http://www.geocities.com/gender_and_transp ort

Gender aspects of access I thank you for your attention and continuing company in the development of this technical field.
