2 2 Brussels 16-17 October 2012 Main Theme: Supporting Inclusive and Sustainable Growth Development cooperation should be a catalyst for partner countries’ own growth Imperative to promote a growth inclusive (in which most people can participate in or benefit from) and sustainable (not harmful for future generations)

3 3 Brussels 16-17 October 2012 Main Theme: Supporting Inclusive and Sustainable Growth Actions to be undertaken at 3 levels: 1.Foundations for inclusive growth e.g. social protection, health & education 2.Drivers for growth and job creation e.g. business environment, regional integration 3.Sectors with strong multiplier impact and that contribute to environmental protection & climate change prevention/adaptation

4 4 Brussels 16-17 October 2012 Sub themes of the 2012 EDDs 1.Development, agriculture and food security 2.Engaging the private sector for development 3.Empowering people for inclusive growth STAKEHOLDERS WILL BE REQUESTED TO SUBMIT PROPOSALS FOR PANELS BASED ON THE GENERAL THEME AND ON THREE SUBTHEMES

5 5 Brussels 16-17 October 2012 Sub-Theme 1– Development, agriculture and food security - Context Agriculture is the backbone of developing countries economies and poverty is predominant in rural areas Coherence of EU internal agricultural policies with development cooperation objectives (PCD): the role of the Common Agricultural Policy

6 6 Brussels 16-17 October 2012 Sub-Theme 1– Development, agriculture and food security – Possible topics Added value of agricultural research and technology transfer; Promoting the role of public private partnership in agriculture; Role of food markets and trade; Secure and equitable access to land; Resilient and sustainable intensification; Addressing the needs of rural women.

7 7 Brussels 16-17 October 2012 Sub-Theme 2 – Engaging the private sector for development - Context Importance of making private sector a partner in development recognised in Agenda for Change and at Busan HLF Need to leverage private funding for meeting global challenges, and achieving inclusive and sustainable growth

8 8 Brussels 16-17 October 2012 Sub-Theme 2 – Engaging the private sector for development - Objectives EDDs 2012 as forum for discussion of innovative models and new approaches to private-public collaboration; Stimulate discussion among private, public and civil society actors about their respective roles and collaboration in development

9 9 Brussels 16-17 October 2012 Sub-Theme 2 – Engaging the private sector for development Possible topics for coverage in panels: Joint private-public action and dialogue for more effective economic policy making. New form of industrial policy for developing countries. Merits and limits of mobilizing private sector funding for development through blending of grants and loans. Role of the private sector in transition to a green economy Inclusive business models for improving the conditions of households and workers at the "base of the pyramid".

10 10 Brussels 16-17 October 2012 Sub theme 3 – Empowering people for inclusive growth Objectives: EDDs 2012 as forum for discussion of innovative models and new approaches to supporting 1.Productive employment, decent work for all and improved employability 2.Social protection in support of inclusive growth Stimulate discussion among private, public and civil society actors about their respective roles and collaboration in development
