5 Britain’s society Britain has always been a mixed society – with Celts, Romans, Saxons, Normans and Vikings settling here . In the 19th Century we built an empire around the word. In return for living under British rule, citizens from the empire could settle in the UK. After World War II Britain asked workers from the Caribbean and India to come and work here in a variety of industries such as shipbuilding. Families started settling in Britain, with various backgrounds and cultures and religions. Britain developed into a multi-ethnic and multi-faith society. British law protects its citizens with the Race Relations Act 1976, making racial discrimination and promoting racial hatred illegal. Although Britain is recognised as a Christian country, with the Queen being the head of the Church of England, there is complete religious freedom. This means that all religions are respected and are allowed to practice their religion.
