Inch pound torque wrench Standard screwdriver Pliers Required Tools

3 Systematic Approach Technicians need to take their time when disassembling an engine. This is not a race! Listen for instruction when to remove the next piece. Do not work ahead! Lay assemblies in order as they were removed. Put fasteners with removed assemblies, or loosely back in bolt holes.

4 Let’s Begin Close fuel shut-off valve
Disconnect spark plug ignition lead from spark plug Move throttle to stop position Safety Issues. Prevent accidental starting of engine.

5 Remove Air Cleaner Cover and Filter
Use flat bladed screwdriver or 8 mm socket Inspect paper filter for tears Foam pre-cleaner washable if equipped Replace if necessary Inspect tabs on filter cover for wear 1)     Remove Air Cleaner Cover And Air Cleaner Cartridge a)     Air-Cooled Engines Work In Some Of The Harshest Conditions. Air Must Filtered To Prevent Dirt From Wearing Components And Causing Engine Failure b)     Some Units May Have A Foam Pre-Filter. Pre-Filter Promotes Longer Life Of Paper Filter c)      Never Use Compressed Air To Clean A Paper Cartridge. Air Could Make A Hole In The Paper. Tap Cartridge Gently On A Hard Surface To Clean. If Very Dirty, Or Soaked With Gas Or Oil, Cartridge Must Be Replaced. d)     Pre-Filter Can Be Washed With Water And Dish Soap. Ring Out, And Squeeze In Paper Towel To Dry. Do Not Oil Pre-Cleaner. e)     Inspect Air Cleaner Back Plate For Any Signs Of Dirt Being Ingested Into The Engine f)        Inspect Bottom Tabs Of Air Cleaner Cover For Any Signs Of Wear. Customer May Have Assembled Cover Incorrectly. If Tabs Were Not Put In Plate, Dirt May Have Been Ingested.

6 Remove Air Cleaner Backing Plate
Use 8 mm socket Fasteners may have Loctite® on threads Disconnect breather tube at valve cover Inspect gasket on rear of cover for leaks or tears 1)     Remove Air Cleaner Backing Plate a)     Plate Serves As Support For Filters b)     A Gasket Is Glued To The Back Of The Plate To Keep Out Dirt. c)      Breather Tube Is Connected To Plate i)  Breather Allows Forced Crankcase Air To Escape. Air Contains Oil And Fuel Vapors, Which Are Re-Burned Crankcase Must Operate In A Vacuum To Prevent Oil From Being Pressurized, Which Would Burn

7 Fuel Valve Check that fuel shut-off valve is closed Safety Issues.
Prevent accidental starting of engine.

8 Disconnect Fuel Line Use pliers to detach fuel-hose clamp at carburetor Remove line from carb fitting 1)     Disconnect Fuel Hose from carb Move Clamp up. Twist line off of fitting

9 Remove Speed Control Panel
Use 8 mm socket Fuel valve must be off Throttle lever must be centered 1)     Remove Speed Control Panel a)     Fuel Valve Must Be Orientated In Off Position And Speed Control At Mid-Point To Remove Panel b)     Serves As Decoration, And Place To Attach Decals c)      Has A Hinge On One End

10 Remove Fuel Tank & Fuel Hose
Use 10 mm socket Use pliers to move clamp at carburetor fitting Use caution for any spilled fuel 1)     Remove Fuel Tank And Fuel Hose. Remove Fuel Hose At Carburetor End By Using A Pliers To Move Clamp. a)     Tank Serves As Reservoir For Fuel b)     Cap Has Threads That Allow Air To Be Vented. Must Use Proper Cap. c)      Tank Has Tapered Fill Area Below Neck To Allow Fuel To Run Off In Event Of Spill d)     Tank Has Baffles Inside To Reduce Fuel From Sloshing e)     Customers Should Leave A 1 ½” Gap Of Air Below Fuel Tank Neck To Avoid Spills f)        Fuel Tanks And Lines Are Now Coated To Prevent Evaporative Fuel Emissions

11 Identify Governor Parts
Draw governor mechanism and label parts

12 Remove Governor Control Lever
Use 3/8" wrench Loosen pinch bolt nut, but do not remove. Lift control lever off of crank 1)     Perform Static Governor Adjustment a)     Move throttle to fast speed b)     Watch For Rotation Of Throttle Plate. i)      Open To Close c)      As Throttle Goes To Wide Open, Watch Movement Of Governor Lever On Governor Shaft. i)       If Movement Of Lever Is Clockwise, Rotate Shaft Full Clockwise. If Lever Rotates Counterclockwise, Rotate Shaft Full Counter Clockwise. (1)  Governor Shaft Will Only Rotate About A 1/8th Turn.

13 Remove Governor Springs and Link
Remove short idle spring from lever and bracket Remove larger top-no-load spring from lever and tab Remove link and spring from lever going to carb
