Run-On Sentences

Definition Two or more complete sentences that are written as one sentence. Run-on Sentences do not show where one idea ends and another begins. How to Spot: read your sentence aloud!!

Two types of Run-Ons Fused sentence: writer has joined two or more sentences with no punctuation. Ex. There are many interesting places to visit in Florida in the summer many people like to go to the beaches to swim. Comma Splice: writer has joined two or more sentences with only a comma to separate them. Ex. Schools today have books for every student, many schools also have televisions and computers.

Revising Run-Ons Add a comma and a coordinating conjunction (and, but, for, nor, or, so, yet) Add a semicolon (;) Add a semicolon and a conjunctive adverb (therefore, instead, meanwhile, still, also, nevertheless, or however)  Conjunctive adverbs are always followed by a comma (; however,)

NOTE!! Before you combine two sentences, make sure that the ideas in the sentences are closely related to one another. If you link unrelated ideas, you may confuse your reader. Unrelated: Canada is almost four million square miles in size, and I hope to visit my relatives there someday.
