1 REPULPABLE TAPES

2 Types of splices butt (by a single coated tape)
overlap (by a double coated tape) flying (by a double coated tape)

3 Types of splices Butt splices Overlap splices Flying splice

4 Butt splices

5 Butt splices the splice applied only on one side allows thinner splices but the adhesive could get through the two edges of paper and sticks to the layer below

6 Butt splices applying two tapes (one per side) you avoid this issue and for reducing the thickness you could use tapes of different widths and/or shift them to each other

7 Butt splices compared to overlap splices, butt splices usually allow the splice to be thinner a thin splice is important because it has to pass through narrow gaps of the producing or converting machines (for example the gap between calender rolls)

8 Butt splices They are mainly used at rereelers and rewinders
especially when the splice has to go to papermill final Customer Rereeler - An intermediate winding machine for large rolls Rewinder - A winding machine typically composed of an unwind, slitters, and windup

9 Butt splices The contact between the 2 reels to be spliced happens while the machine is not running (“STATIC” splice) both the application of the tape and the splicing contact are obtained manually (“MANUAL” splice) they may stay inside also for a long time before the reel is reprocessed (“PERMANENT” splice)

10 Butt splices STATIC AND MANUAL: there is no need for a product with a very high tack; usually also a medium tack is sufficient PERMANENT: none of the components of the adhesive has to migrate into the spliced paper (by heat and/or pressure); otherwise we could have a “bleeding” effect

11 Butt splices The following products DO HAVE these characteristics:
repulpability according to TAPPI UM 213A adhesives without any migrating components (no bleeding) good adhesion/tack balance excellent shear resistance 200°C temperature resistance (for short periods)

12 Butt splices. How to match the right product
BN 6368 single coated, with a release liner, standard choice slit liner, red printed and rally stripe versions

13 Butt splices. How to match the right product
BN 6368 THIN as BN 6368 but with a calandered paper backing (lower thickness) to strenghten the overlap manual splice (safety splice) slit liner, red printed and rally stripe versions

14 Butt splices. How to match the right product
BN 6369 as BN 6368 but with a tissue paper backing (very low thickness) to strenghten the overlap manual splice (safety splice)

15 Butt splices. How to match the right product
BN 6370/6375/6376/6373/6383 single coated, linerless, siliconized backing various thicknesses and colours used for high tensile strength types of paper the splice cannot be printed or coated because of the siliconized backing

16 Typical butt splices BN 6368/6368TH BN 6368/6368TH BN 6369/6368TH

17 Overlap splices simple overlap (by double coated tape)
strengthened overlap (by double coated + 1 or 2 single coated tapes)

18 Overlap splices They are mainly used at
rereelers and rewinders (like butt splices) supercalenders sheeters

19 Overlap splices Like butt splices, they are made:
while the machine is not running (“STATIC” splice) manually (“MANUAL” splice) also, they may stay inside also for a long time before the reel is reprocessed (“PERMANENT” splice)

20 Overlap splices STATIC AND MANUAL: there is no need for a product with a very high tack; usually also a medium tack is sufficient PERMANENT: none of the components of the adhesive has to migrate into the spliced paper (by heat and/or pressure); otherwise we could have a “bleeding” effect

21 Overlap splices. How to match the right product
BN 6367 double coated, standard choice

22 Overlap splices. How to match the right product
BN 6365 double coated faster repulpability and greater adhesion compared to BN 6367

23 Overlap splices. How to match the right product
BN 6367 HT double coated higher amount of adhesive (High Tack) compared to BN 6367 for heavy weight papers for core starting applications

24 Typical overlap splices
SIMPLE BN 6367/6365/6367HT STRENGTHENED BN 6367/6365/6367HT BN 6368TH/6369

25 Paster tabs used during automatic splice preparation to fix the last lap of the reel they are needed to avoid the lifting of the last lap during the initial reel rotation when there is the splicing contact they must easily break

26 Paster tabs single coated different shapes trapezoid butterfly
butterfly rectangular
