Stories from the Pacific Te Tuhi Pre visit lesson3

Welcome to Stories from the Pacific During this lesson we will learn about… Designing our story - Symbols Image: http://www.nationalgeographicstock.com/ngsimages/explore/explore.jsf?p=R09SRE9OIEdBSEFOhttp://www.nationalgeographicstock.com/ngsimages/explore/explore.jsf?p=R09SRE9OIEdBSEFO But before we start, let’s recap on what we learnt during our last lesson…

During our last lesson we learnt that Polynesian tapa… Inspires artists to create their own symbols and patterns to tell their individual stories and life experiences. Inspires artists to create art that expresses the importance of culture, community, history and ancestry. Inspires artists to create art that highlights true stories and significant events in history that are just as important today as when they first happened.

Let’s start this lesson by ‘Designing our story – Symbols’.

We have seen many symbols both in Polynesian tapa and by artists telling their story. During this lesson we will draw and create our own personal symbols based on our personal story. 7 Many of the artists we have seen use symbols that express their identity and all the things they value and find important. If we think about our identity and all the things we know are important to each of us then we can start to draw symbols that represent our personal story. To start, we can think of… Interests – write down a few words to describe your interests. School – write down a few words to describe your school. Home – write down a few words to describe your home. Family – write down a few words to describe your family Culture – write down a few words about your culture Now that we have a bank of words to describe our identity, we can turn these words into symbols, starting with…

Culture – which culture do you belong to? And is there a national flag? Image: http://www.mch.govt.nz/nz-identity-heritage/flags http://mdnautical.com/international2/15709-western-samoa-flag.html http://www.techshout.com/internet/2007/28/12-chinese-online-dating-websites-accused-for-promoting-prostitution/ http://www.flags-by-swi.com/internationalflagprices_tonga.html http://www.theflagshop.co.uk/south-african-flag-8ft-x-5ft-1252-p.asp http://www.nowpublic.com/world/india-flag-1 http://www.alliphonewallpapers.com/iphone-wallpaper/id/1084/ http://national--flag.blogspot.co.nz/2012/09/flag-of-england-pictures.html http://www.end2stress.com/tai_chi.html New ZealandSamoaTongaChinaKoreaJapanEngland South AfricaIndia Create symbols for your own story by redrawing interesting shapes found in your country’s flag. Try a few ideas out and use only black and white and in a box similar to symbols in tapa. If you belong to more than one culture, you can create symbols for the other cultures you belong to. Here are a few examples of interesting shapes taken from 8 flags from around the world. Try to spot where the shapes have been taken from on the flag. Flying the flag is a great way to help celebrate cultural difference. Flags are used in many occasions to represent country and culture including the Olympics.

Family – how many members in your family? Image: http://www.vecteezy.com/people/16514-family-people-silhouettes http://wwww.vectorvaco.com http://www.clipartguide.com/_pages/0511-1001-2402-1055.html http://www.art-portrets.ru/black-cat-picture.html http://qtmomcreations.blogspot.co.nz/2010/08/young-family-silhouette.html http://lakeviewadventist.wordpress.com/2011/09/09/family-id-seminar/family-silhouette-clip-art/ http://brickabrack.wordpress.com/tag/silhouettes/ http://www.colourbox.com/vector/silhouettes-of-woman-man-kid-grandfather-grandmother-family-vector- illustration-vector-2478264 We may come from a large or small family. We may have more sisters than brothers, more brothers than sisters or maybe we are the only child in the family. Our pets could be considered part of the family. Using black and white and in a box, create new symbols which represent your family and how important they are to you. Family are a huge part of our identity. They are the people who know us best and who we know us best. We have grown up with them and they have grown up with us. Here are a few examples to get you started…

Is there something that makes your place unique? There is something unique in every place. This could include having a mountain or dormant volcano in your town, an awesome outdoor sculpture or a busy market during a particular day. Using black and white and in a box, create new symbols which represent all the things that make the place you live in unique and special. Home is where we feel most comfortable. It’s a place where we walk, play and hang out. Its a place where memories are created. Here are a few examples to get you started… One tree hill Mount Wellington Auckland: The sky tower Manukau: Outdoor sculpture

Do does our shield or logo look like? Every school in the world is unique and offers something special through a story. Sometimes this story is represented in words and pictures such as a school emblem. The school emblem is like a flag, it represents an entire school and a story of students and teachers aspire to be. Using black and white and in a box, redraw your school emblem into a symbol. This symbol with help represent your school, their story and your identity. School is a great place for learning and catching up with friends. Many things we learn about the world comes from school. Here we learn from teachers and each other. What do you like to do in your spare time? Using black and white and in a box, create new symbols that represent the things you like to do in your spare time and that help represent your personality and identity. Our interests and what we do in our spare time can reflect our personality and identity. The interests we have now may play a huge role in the people we become later on in life. Here are a few examples to get you started… Music Sport Science Gaming

With all the symbols we have created, we will be able to tell our personal story in the same way artists and Polynesian tapa can.

Art activity Once all our symbols are copied carefully cut out each symbol until all symbols are cut out. Find a large white piece of paper and experiment with arranging your symbols on the page. Once you are happy with your arrangement you can paste your symbols down with glue. Now that you have your symbols, make copies of each symbol using a photocopier – our teacher can help us with this. Remember symbols on tapa were arrange differently to one another, so think about which arrangement you would like to follow. Don’t forget to bring your work when you visit Te Tuhi as we will be using this artwork as a starter for what we will make in the art studio. Samoa Vanuatu Tahiti TongaNuie
