Safety Talk ~ Static Electricity Static Electricity: Is the amounts of positive and negative electric charge within a material are not perfectly equal, where voltage is high and current is low. Electrical charges structure of an atom Protons : positive (+) charge Neutrons : no charge (neutral) Electrons : negative (-) charge

Safety Talk ~ Static Electricity Electrical charges… cont’d: Protons and neutrons : held together very tightly Electrons: held very loosely Positive charge: An atom that looses more electrons Negative charge: An atom that gains more electrons

Safety Talk ~ Static Electricity Creating Static Electricity Static electricity appears when two dissimilar insulating materials are placed into intimate contact and then separated. Examples of insulating (non-conductor) materials: plastic, wood, rubber, cloth, wool, gasoline, etc.

Safety Talk ~ Static Electricity Effects of static electricity: Attraction Repulsion Sparks Law of Attraction and Repulsion: Opposite charges attract. Like charges repel.

Safety Talk ~ Static Electricity Effects of static electricity…cont’d: The force is strong enough to actually move a lightweight object. AttractionRepulsion

Safety Talk ~ Static Electricity Effects of static electricity…cont’d: Sparks: …the sudden rush of electrons through the air from one conductor to another, heating up the air until it glows white hot. The way sparks occur: require conductors and non-conductors charges move in conductor caused by friction

Safety Talk ~ Static Electricity The way…cont’d: Electrical pressure increases Attraction overcomes air’s resistance: fly to another object through the air Main hazards of static electricity: Fire Explosion

Safety Talk ~ Static Electricity How can static electricity be controlled: bonding and grounding humidification ionization of air static collectors additives

Safety Talk ~ Static Electricity Earth bonding application:

Safety Talk ~ Static Electricity Grounding application:

Safety Talk ~ Static Electricity Grounding application: T h e E n d
