Regions of Canada

The Eastern Provinces The Heartland The Western Provinces The Canadian North

The Eastern Provinces Provinces - New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador. Most people live in cities near the coast. Forestry and fishing are the major economic activities. Most people are of British descent. Halifax, Nova Scotia is the largest city in the region.

The Heartland Provinces - Ontario and Quebec
Major cities are Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa. Quebec is a center of French culture. Quebec uses underground tunnels and overhead tunnels to protect themselves during the harsh winters. Ontario is Canada’s top manufacturing province.

The Western Provinces Provinces - British Columbia on the Pacific coast and the prairie provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Farming is important there, especially growing wheat. Alberta is rich in oil and natural gas. In British Columbia, Vancouver is the largest city and a major center for trade with Asia.

The Canadian North Territories - Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, the Inuit homeland. The region is very cold because of its location to the Arctic Circle. Covers 1/3 of Canada but less than 100,000 people live there. During some parts of winter, sunlight is limited to only a few hours a day.
