8 The United Nations is an international organization whose stated aims include promoting and facilitating cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights, civil rights, civil liberties, political freedoms, democracy, and the achievement of lasting world peace.

9 The UN was founded in 1945 after World War II to replace the League of Nations, to stop wars between countries, and to provide a platform for dialogue. It contains many smaller organizations that carry out its missions, including UNICEF. UNICEF is an agency of the United Nations that administers programmes to aid education and child and maternal health in developing countries. 11 Meeting the Needs of Children in Armed Conflict: UNICEF in Action UNICEF uses a range of activities to meet the needs of children affected by armed conflict in countries where it has offices. Each conflict has its own unique history and affects civilian populations in different ways, so the type of activities UNICEF carries out vary from country to country. TASK You will split into small groups and then you will create a poster to publicise the work carried out by UNICEF.
