Constellations and the solar system! What is a constellation? Constellation names Were constellations invented The sun! The solar system bibliography

Constellations are imaginary things that poets, farmers and astronomers have made up over the past 6,000 years and most probably longer. On a dark night you can see 1,000 to 1,500 stars. A constellation is a group of stars that when seen from earth forms a pattern, (picture.) HOME

Constellation names were given by the Greek astronomers. Constellations were named after the people, animals and objects of the Greek mythology. http://www.astro.illinois.edu /~jkaler/sow/const.html Constellation names!

Were constellations discovered? Biggest and smallest constellations Constellations were not invented but were discovered. The biggest star apart from the sun is Crux which is the southern cross star, it has 101 stars that are visible, the largest constellation is Hydra which is know as the water snake, it takes up 3,158 % of the night sky.

The sun! The sun is a large ball of hot gasses formed and put together by gravity. It is composed mostly of Hydrogen which is 70 % and 28% of helium and also other elements such as oxygen, nitrogen and carbon. The sun goes around the galaxy once every 220 million years, this is known as a cosmic year.

The solar system! The Sun, The suns average distance from earth is 1496 million km. The suns size is 139200 km. The temperature of the sun is 5500C and the core is 15000000C. The suns surfaces 6000C but the atmosphere can be up to millions of degrees. This confuses scantiest because they do not understand how the atmosphere can be so hot with a surface much cooler. Although the sun appears small it is actually a huge star the reason it looks small is because it is 93 miles from earth. The sun is also 5000 million years old and has an expected life span of 10-12 billion years. How planets formed? The sun and planets formed over 5 billion year ago, which were made from a cloud of gasses and dust left behind from dying stars. This was mainly made up by Hydrogen and Helium along with other elements which made the planets solid. The cloud then collapsed into a rotating spinning disk with all of the materials put into a central cluster were the sun then formed, the mass started to grow and gravity pulled in more and more materials, the planets then started to form. Facts, The planets Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are small planets and all have solid surfaces because the surface is made out of rock. Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune
