2 WELCOME TO LONDON! London is the capital city of England and of the United Kingdom, with a population of about 6-7 million. It is the largest city in Great Britain and one of the largest in the world. London began life as a Roman fortification at a place where the Thames was narrow enough and it was possible to build the bridge.

5 The City of London The City of London is one of the major banking centres of the world and you can find banks of many nations in the fa­mous Threadneedle Street and the surrounding area. Here you will find the Bank of England. Nearby is the Stock Exchange which is like a busy market, except that here no food but shares in commercial companies are bought and sold.

6 The East End covers a wide area to the east of the City. There are many docks and warehouses there. It is also one of those areas of London where people from abroad have come to find work. The East End is also famous as the centre of the clothing industry in London. The East End

7 The West End The West End is the name given to the area of central London north from The Mall to Oxford Street, includes Trafalgar Square, tie main shopping areas, mad the entertainment cen­tres of Soho, Piccadilly Cirrus and Shaftsbury Avenue. 8 Westminster Westminster is another central and important part of London. Most governmental buildings are situated there. On the left bank of the Thames is Westminster Palace, famous as the Houses of Parliament, it is the seat of the British Parliament. The Clock Tower with the hour-bell called Big Ben known all over the world. The great glory of Westminster is, of course the Abbey. Many visitors to the Abbey are attracted to Poets‘ Corner.

9 There are always a lot of people and pigeons on the square. Every winter there is a big Christmas tree which is a gift from Norway in the middle of the square. On New Year’s Eve people gather around the tree. In the middle of the square there is Admiral Nelson’s Column.

10 TOWER BRIDGE Tower Bridge crosses the Thames right next to the Tower of London. It was actually built in 1894 of steel and was merely faced with stonework.

11 This big palace is the most famous building in the world – the British Parliament. The building is 280 metres long. There are more than 1000 rooms.

12 Big Ben is the largest four-faced chiming clock and the third-tallest free-standing clock tower in the world. It celebrated its 150th anniversary in May 2009 (the clock itself first ticking on 31 May 1859), during which celebratory events took place.
