2 The students will explain the policy of brinkmanship by describing the U.S. and Soviet actions that caused the Cold War to spread around the world Announcement: Chapter 18/19 Test May 13 Drill: Read “Race for the H-Bomb” on page 625 and answer the following: 1. On what date did Truman authorize work on the H-Bomb? 2. How much force was delivered by the 1 st H- Bomb?

3 Policy of Brinkmanship John Foster Dulles, secretary of state under Ike believed that the willingness to go to the brink of war Cold War Spreads around the world Iran Shah put in place in 1953 by the CIA Mohammed Reza Pahlevi Suez crisis (Nationalism) Egypt wanted a dam on the upper Nile-Aswan Dam Nasser flirted with the communists and Dulles pulled the money Nasser nationalized the canal and no oil could get to Britain and France and Israel and they assaulted Egypt in Oct. 1956 OPEC formed in 1960-Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Iran and Venezuela

4 A summit in Geneva West Germany joined NATO in 1955 Warsaw Pact formed in 1955 “open skies” USSR left Austria in 1955 and Khrushchev denounced dead Joe Stalin Hungarian Uprising in 1956 Soviet Union violently ended Hungarian protesting the Warsaw Pact Soviet Army killed 30,000 Hungarian protesters Eisenhower Doctrine-U.S. will defend the Middle East against communism

5 October 4, 1957 Sputnik launching made Americans feel vulnerable to nuclear attack January 31, 1958-U.S. launched 1 st satellite U-2 is shot down U-2 planes took pictures of the USSR Francis Gary Powers shot down by a Soviet pilot on May 1, 1960 Khrushchev upset at Eisenhower and refused to meet during the summit on May 15, 1960
