3 Reforms Reforms began quietly in 910 with the founding of a Benedictine monastery at Cluny in France. One way that the church adapted was by building MONASTERIES Monasteries were communities in which Christians gave up their private possessions to pursue lives in prayer.

4 Spiritual Revival New age of religious feeling was born Called the Age of Faith

5 More Changes Popes prompted reforms Enforced laws against the marriage of priests Enforced laws against the selling of church offices.

6 Church Reorganization New Church Structure advised by the Curia – a group created to advise the pope. Made canon law (church law) Extended the power of the pope Church collected taxes called tithes Early 1200’s, success in their reforms New church group arose Friars – group that moved from place to place spreading the ideas of the church Women became nuns and joined in the spiritual revival
