2. Introduction to this Course This course is designed to introduce pharmacy students to data processing and programming with pharmaceutical application in mind. Students are expected to become familiar with computer technology and will learn how to use computer as a tool for attaining greater effectiveness and efficiency in provision of pharmaceutical services.

3. Course Objectives To introduce students to computer fundamentals. To familiarize the student with a variety of software packages (especially Microsoft office) which are utilized for practice and management purposes. To learn how to effectively use the information provided through these packages.

4. Grade Distribution First Midterm- 15 Marks Second Midterm- 15 Marks Projects and assignments- 30 Marks Final- 40 Marks Which will be divided appropriately.

6. Introduction What is a Computer? A computer is a programmable machine. The two principle characteristics of a computer are: Response and Execution. Response- it responds to a specific set of instructions in a well defined manner. Execution-It can execute a pre-recorded list of instructions (a program).

7. Introduction Modern computers are electronic and digital. Hardware: The actual machinery– wires, transistors, and circuits, the monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc. Software: The actual instructions and data.

8. Introduction Parts of the computer : Memory: Enables a computer to store, at least temporarily data and programs. Mass storage device: Allows a computer to permanently retain large amounts of data. Common mass storage devices include disk drives. Input device: Usually a keyboard and mouse, the input device is the conduit through which data and instructions enter a computer.

9. Introduction Output device: A display screen, printer, or other device that lets you see what the computer has accomplished. Central Processing Unit: The heart of the computer, this is the component that actually executes instructions.

Search within the computer You can search from many places: Start Menu, Control panel, and any folder No matter where you are you can usually find what you need even if the item you need is in a different location. The search box on the start menu is also one of the most convenient ways to find things on your computer. It will also search your email messages, saved instant messages, appointments, and contacts.
