www.spice-rtn.org Mid-Term Review Meeting, February 13-14, Tutzing Earthquake source dynamics Background Beyond the classical model:  frictional heating and melt lubrication  thermal pressurization of fluids  dilatancy of fault gouge  off-fault dissipation by rock damage The classical earthquake model: fault plane with friction Problem posed by recent observations: scaling from laboratory to natural faults (fracture energy, stress heterogeneities)

www.spice-rtn.org Mid-Term Review Meeting, February 13-14, Tutzing Earthquake source dynamics Focus Group One of 4 focus groups created at the TG Local Scale workshop (Zurich, march 2005): 1.Earthquake source dynamics 2.Source inversion 3.Kinematic models for strong motion prediction 4.Code verification (with TG Numerical Methods) Teams involved: IPG ParisENS Paris ETH ZurichCU Bratislava U NaplesINGV Bologna

www.spice-rtn.org Mid-Term Review Meeting, February 13-14, Tutzing Earthquake source dynamics Scope of the Focus Group Main goal, as outlined after meetings in Paris (May 2005) and Smolenice (September 2005): Move towards new paradigms in earthquake physics: seismological relevance, mechanical formulation and computational resolution of currently debated fault zone physical processes with focus on processes generating high frequency radiation (destructive ground motion).

www.spice-rtn.org Mid-Term Review Meeting, February 13-14, Tutzing Effect of off-fault dissipation: visco-plasticity, damage [ETH Zurich / LMU Munich] Research snapshots Effect of complex fault geometry: the case of kinked faults [ENS Paris/ IPG Paris/ ETH Zurich] Effect of stress/strength heterogeneities on final earthquake size and rupture style (crack vs. pulse) [ETH Zurich, ENS Paris] Plastic strain

www.spice-rtn.org Mid-Term Review Meeting, February 13-14, Tutzing Outlook: introducing new physics Expected from our next workshop on “Earthquake dynamics and interface behavior: friction, breakdown and off-fault dissipation“ (Paris, March 7-8, 2006): discriminate the most relevant physical ingredients among recently proposed candidates summarize their mechanical formulation discuss their computational implementation

www.spice-rtn.org Mid-Term Review Meeting, February 13-14, Tutzing Outlook: bridging the gap between dynamic and inverse modelling Final step in connection with the Focus Group on Earthquake Source Inversion: analyze our numerical models with the astigmatic eye of an observational seismologist provide dynamic constraints for kinematic source inversions
