1 THE WORLD OF POETRY Poetic Terms to know & understand POETRY: is an imaginative awareness of experience expressed through meaning, sound, and rhythmic language choices so as to evoke an emotional response.

2 Types of Poetry http://www.types-of-poetry.org.uk/ We will focus on: Lyric, Sonnets, Free Verse, Name, Couplet and Rhymes

3 Pens ready! ALLITERATION: The repetition of the initial sounds (usually consonants) of stressed syllables in neighboring words CONSONANCE: The close repetition of the same end consonants of stressed syllables with differing vowel sounds, Ex: such as boat and night, or the words drunk and milk ASSONANCE: The relatively close juxtaposition of the same or similar vowel sounds, but with different end consonants in a line or passage, thus a vowel rhyme, Ex. As in the words, date and fade.

4 RHYMING…Depends on the TIMING… REPETITION: When a word or phrase is used over and over again for a significant purpose; to instill an idea into the memory of the audience INTERNAL RHYME: Rhyming that occurs inside a line of poetry END RHYME: Rhyming that occurs at the end of the line

5 EVEN MORE TERMS ONOMATOPOEIA: The formation or use of words which imitate sounds (Buzz, bang) FREE VERSE: A type of poem that has no set pattern or rhyme scheme METAPHOR: Comparison of 2 unlike things by stating one is the other

6 STRETCH YOUR FINGERS PERSONIFICATION Giving non-human objects/things human characteristics Ex: The trees danced in the wind. Ex: Cartoons SIMILE Comparison of 2 unlike things using like, than, or as Ex: SYMBOLISM When an object, person, idea has meaning beyond its literal value (represents something else)

7 MORE AND MORE TERMS HYPERBOLE: An extreme exaggeration ALLUSION: reference to a person, place or thing in history or time IMAGERY: Using words to create an image in the reader’s mind

8 Getting closer to the finale TONE The author’s attitude towards the subject STANZA: A division of a poem made by arranging the lines into units separated by a space, usually of a corresponding number of lines and a recurrent pattern of meter and rhyme.meterrhyme

9 TERMS! TERMS! TERMS! FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE Language that is not literal in meaning. Used often to make comparisons or create mental pictures. There are FIVE literary devices that make up figurative language: Metaphor Simile Personification Onomatopoeia Hyperbole

10 ALMOST DONE SPEAKER/VOICE: The speaker or voice in the poem AUTHOR: The writer of the poem AUDIENCE: The intended readers/viewers of the poem MOOD: The feelings the reader has while/after reading the story

11 YOU MADE IT THROUGH! DENOTATION: The dictionary definition of a word CONNOTATION: The implied meaning of a word (EX-home= love/comfort) COUPLET: A pair of rhyming lines
