3 Geographic Location St. Lucia in windward islands, btwn Martinique and St. Vincent. Off NW coast of Barbados Area square miles. 14 miles wide and 27 miles long Soufriere on west coast - shares Caribbean sea SMMA extends from Anse Jambon in the north to Anse l’Ivrogne in the South 11 km of coastline In this region you will find beautiful scenery, a variety of coral reefs and attractive beaches

9 Experimental Project Intensive Stakeholder consultations
* 07/16/96 Experimental Project Intensive Stakeholder consultations National initiative on System of Protected Areas (SLNT and CANARI) Community Consultations Led by: SRDF, DoF & CANARI Stakeholders include Fishers, Residents, Proprietors, etc. SLNT – saint lucia national trust held a consultation on the system of protected areas. Idea was to make jalousie into a national park. Therefore agreed to start this national initiative in Soufriere. Dialogue commenced between SLNT, SDF, CANARI and DoF *

19 Mission Statement The mission of the Soufriere Marine Management Area is to contribute to national and local development, particularly in the fisheries and tourism sectors, through the management of the coastal zone of Soufriere, based on the principles of sustainable use, cooperation among resource users, institutional collaboration, active and enlightened local participation, and equitable sharing of benefits and responsibilities among stakeholders. 19
