Adapted from Mrs. Boatwright's Food Web Project http://zunal.com/introduction.php?w=90548

OH, WHAT A TANGLED WEB WE WEAVE! Every organism on this planet is part of a food chain! You are about to discover how this works! What is a producer, consumer and decomposer? What are the roles of each and how are they inter- connected?

Every living thing needs energy to live. The sun produces energy. The suns' light lets plants make their own food and grow. when plants grow, other animals eat the plants to get energy. You are learning about how living things get food and why that relationship is called a food chain. A food chain is the transfer of energy from one living thing to another living thing.

Task: Find the definitions of producers, consumers, and decomposers. Tell how the food web works and demonstrate with a drawing.

Process: You will be placed in groups of three. Each of you in the group will be assigned to research either producer, consumer, or decomposer. You will use the links provided to do your research. Please give a definition and examples. Then, get together with your group and discuss the roles of the producers, consumers and decomposers, and how they are linked together. Next, your group will make a drawing of a food web on a poster. I would like to see everyone in the group involved in the drawing. You should each be responsible for drawing the part that you researched. Finally, your group will make a presentation to the class. You will show your poster and each one will explain the role of the part of the food web that you have researched.
