1 STUDY HALL Get your blue card out and place it on your desk
Sit in your assigned seat Work on something quietly

2 List (use notes if needed) 3 animals that eat only plants and grass
Warm Up List (use notes if needed) 3 animals that eat only plants and grass 3 animals that eat only meat 3 animals that eat both

3 Volunteers Who wants to share: Herbivores…. Carnivores….. Omnivores……

4 Be Creative… You will have 10 minutes to create your own food chain in your notebook Do not use organisms already in our food chain example Be Creative….think of different organisms!

5 Now it’s your turn… In these 10 minutes….
List 1 producer, 3 consumers, and 1 decomposer in your food chain. Consumers…think of 1 herbivore, 1 omnivore, and 1 carnivore that belong together Add arrows showing the feeding relationships and flow of energy through your food chain

6 Share your own Food Chain ?

7 Write in notebook. Food Webs: More complex than food chains.
Ecosystems consist of many food chains linked together All organisms depend on one another for survival

8 Food Webs – Florida Everglades
Think about this when watching... How is a food web different from a food chain? What organisms did you recognize from the video? What new organisms did you learn about?

9 Food Webs – Florida Everglades
Volunteers.... How is a food web different from a food chain? What organisms did you recognize from the video? What new organisms did you learn about?

10 Weaving the Food Web You will work in groups to start creating a food web using your different food chains Use the poster paper to create your web

11 Food Webs: Think about how things are connected by what they eat!

12 Jeff Corwin Experience: Madagascar
Last part of class, we will watch a documentary about the Island of Madagascar While watching 1. Write down the names of as many organisms as you can from the documentary Net Flix: The Land that Time Forgot: Madagascar

13 Producers, consumers, decomposers video

14 Carbon Cycle Water, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and oxygen are substances cycled between the living and non-living environments.

15 Now it’s our turn to prove we got this…
You have 2 minutes…. First, think of a producer, two consumers, and a decomposer. (think of things that belong together, like a cat would eat a mouse. DO NOT use that example) Now write them down in your notebook.

16 Directions We will go over what is expected on your foldable and then the slide will be left up with your check list so you can refer to it as you work. Remember to look at your notes and drawings from today to help you create your own food chain.

17 Foldable Check List You have 1 producer, 2 consumers, and 1 decomposer. Outside: All four flaps are labeled. All four flaps have a drawing. Energy flow arrows are included. Inside: Each type is defined. You explained your food chain and how the organism fits in it.

18 Let’s Test our Knowledge
Turn to the person next to you and do your BEST to explain your foldable and the different organisms you selected.

19 Review! All things get energy from food.
Green plants use energy from the sun to make their food. Plants use the food they make for energy to grow. Animals get energy by eating plants and other animals. The energy in living things originates from the sun.

20 Answer in notebook. (complete sentences)
Do animals need the sun to survive? Why or why not. Explain! 

21 Review Green plants use the sun’s energy directly to make food.
When animals eat green plants and other animals eat those animals, the energy moves from one living thing to another. Ultimately all the members of a food chain depend on the energy from the sun.

22 Activity Time! We are going to make our very own food web!
I will give you each a card. (Do not bend or draw on it) When I call you up, you will join the circle. I will explain the steps as we go.

23 The ball of yarn represents the energy.
The sun will hold the end of the yarn.

24 Sun move to the center of the classroom.

25 Raise your hand! Who can the sun give its energy to? Only ONE student.

26 How can all these other plants get the energy they need?!

27 How many food chains are there?
What do all of our food chains together look like? What is the difference between a food chain and a food web? Who is holding the most pieces of yarn? Why? Who else is part of many food chains? What would happen if all the green plants died?

28 How could we show what could happen if one kind of plant, such as all the clovers died?
If all the clovers are gone, who may have trouble getting enough food? What happened to our food web? Why should we be concerned about each kind of plant or animal?
