2. Introduction After we read this story we will discuss: 1, What are some of the plants and animals that live in the pond water? 2. What are some of the animals that live both in and out of the pond water? 3. What are some of the changes that take place in the pond throughout the year?

3. Before Reading Look at the Illustrations Talk to your partner. What time of year do you think the pictures show? Why?

4. While We Read We want to look for evidence of food chains or webs. The food chain is all animals and plants considered as a group in which a plant is eaten by an insect or animal, which is then eaten by another animal and so on.

5. Energy is transferred through the food chain. First the sun gives light to green plants. The plants use this light from the sun to make their own food so that they can grow.

6. Energy is transferred through the food chain. Then the green plant is eaten by an animal. The animal gets energy from the plant to grow.

7. Energy is transferred through the food chain.
