7 Alkali Metals Group 1 (except hydrogen)
Extremely reactive – found in compounds with other elements Extremely soft (can cut with a knife) Example: sodium (Na) is found in table salt

8 Alkaline Earth Metals Group 2 elements Highly reactive
Softer than most metals except the alkalis Example: Calcium (Ca) is used in muscle contractions

Poor conductors of electricity and heat Very important in living organisms

12 Halogens Group 17 Highly reactive – bad for living creatures in high doses Examples: chlorine in swimming pools

13 Noble Gases Group 18 Extremely unreactive Colorless, odorless
Example: Neon gas is used to light up neon signs

14 Metalloids Border between metals and non-metals
Have physical and chemical properties of both metals and non-metals Examples: Silicon is used in both computers and prosthetics
