2. Creating musical instruments from recycled materials Thirty-forty years ago it was a very common practice for children to build their own toys with recovery materials, but we believe that also today’s children can make with their own hands small items such as musical instruments. Under the guidance of the music teacher our students made musical instruments by using recycled objects and materials like tin cans, bottle caps, coffee containers toilet paper, paper towel rolls, bins that contained paints, plastic funnels, rice grains, small stones, sand, reeds, sticks, nylon, iron rods, recycled paper, natutal colours………… In this way they experienced a concrete practice of reuse and recycling that has allowed them to find out how waste material has got an almost magical property: “ produce sounds” This activity has also encouraged the development of students’creative and artistic skills and allowed them to get closer to musical intruments and learn to recognize the tone, the shape and the way they are used.

16. In our school we recycle paper thanks to a simple procedure. Recycled paper

17. First paper sheets are cut into small pieces and put in a large bowl with hot water and mixed with a blender.

19. This mixture is then put on frames of different size and shape. The frames have a net through wich this mixture is filtered.

The Pigotta The “pigotta” project was started by Unicef in 1988 to provide the African children with some vital needs like vaccines, medicine, and food to reduce the risk of mortality in their first five years after birth. By donating at least 20 euros you can adopt a “pigotta” made by the volunteers of Unicef. The motto of this project is “a doll can save a child”. Like other schools our school is also inspired by this donation project of Unicef Italia and created “ pigotte ” all made of recycled materials.

Necessary Materials and Equipments : For body: cotton and self colored elastic clothes (white, pink, brown colors symbolizing the children from all over the world), padding, and kapok (silk cotton) For dresses: colored clothes, laces, and knitting needles For hair: colored wool, raffia Face: pens (which can mark on the clothes) In the dialect of Lombardy, Pigotta is a traditional handmade rag doll which many generations played with. “Pigotte” can be produced easily as you need only scissors, a needle, sewing thread, some cotton, and a little creativity. The students can also make it with a little help of their teachers.

How to proceed: step 1: By looking at the model shape of UNICEF you can draw the body shape of pigotte on the two layered cloth. the height of a pigotta should be at most 50 cm long. step 2: Now you can cut the cloth according to the lines you drew. step 3: sew the body of the cloth as a framework by letting some space to insert the staff in it. step 4: you can sew it with a machine

Go on… step 5: reverse the cloth, insert the staff, and sew the part which was left opened before. step 6: sew the joints of legs and arms to allow them to bend and to make them sit. step 7: Now you can dress it. You can make the clothes according to the style you prefer. step 8: draw or lace the face of the doll (eyes, nose, mouth etc.) last step: you can prepare a pigotta identity card and fill it : a photo, name, date of birth, and the name of person who made it.
